I think the engine would stall long before overheating if you turned the distributor towards advanced with the engine idling. I have never, to this day, seen an engine overheat because of too much advance in idle. So if you floor it and keep it there, you could probably make the temperature climb downwards, because of the rich condition you create. The faster the piston moves up and down ( rpm ) the more advance the engine needs. The more rpm the more "suction", the more suction the more a/f-micture.Īnd though the centrifugal advance may be all in, or close to, at about 2k rpm ( normal highway rpm I guess ), it may not be even close to enough advance in relation to piston speed. It takes more advance at that altitude, and there is less inches of Mercury. Throw all of that out the window if you live in say Denver at an altitude of 5280 feet. 29.90 inches of mercury, on a standard day of 59 degrees and sea level. If you have a different camshaft then you need to find out what your vacuum is at idle and change the can accordingly otherwise you need to. In most cases starting out with 12 degrees of initial advance is about right. Any engine, the timing was set by the factory at standard conditions. If your can is giving you too much then it cant be the correct can for your car. there will always be high vacuum when cruising with very light throttle application, no matter what rpm the engine is seeing. You want about 16 initial timing and itll get you to 36 total with vacuum disconnected 3500-4000 rpm. The later the mixture is ignited in relation to TDC ( retard ), the more burning mixture will be let out by the exhaust valve = alot of heat in the manifolds/headers!!!!Īnd if the engine is missing vacuum advance ( hooked to manifold vacuum ofcourse ) it could also very likely overheat at cruise speeds. If I hooked up vacuum advance so it got 20-or-so more degrees, putting it at about 30 degrees in idle, it ran like a charm, steady 210 degrees for hours. I once adjusted a smog pontiac 400, when I set the timing at 10 degrees initial and left the vacuum advance plugged, so the engine only got the 10 degrees of advance in idle, it overheated in like a minute or so. retarded means firing later on the pistons way towards TDC. advanced means firing earlier on the pistons way towards TDC. So it appears that I need to add 10 initial. I understand that the 350 should have about 34 TOTAL timing. All, this video was designed to help others. I'm using an aftermarket distributor with vacuum advance and the tech data states that it 'has 24 (crankshaft degrees) of mechanical advance (between 3,000 and 3,200 RPM). This video shows how to set Initial Timing and Total Advance Timing on 350 Small block engine. ( See Online 90 Day Reporting information at this website under the Online Services section) I have regular street cam in this 350 SB. – Phuket Town Main Immigration office room 101. Late reporting (after the 7 day grace period) can result in a fine of 200 Baht a day up to a maximum of 5000 Baht. The 90 day reporting has to be up to date when leaving the country. Depending on your cylinder heads, compression ratio, camshaft, and centrifugal advance curve in the distributor, 'normal' base timing for a street high-perf small-block Chevy is somewhere. The cam is a COMP 260/264 degrees duration at 0.050 with 0.645/0.630-inch lift on a 101 lobe center (cam is advanced 6 degrees). – The first extension done at the Immigration office.ĩ0 day reporting can be done 14 days before or 7 days after the reporting date. People staying over 90 days in the country have to do the 90 day reporting.
